Get Rid of the 1%

I was getting over a cold, and it was very, very chilly outside. I’d just woken up from a nap in a patch of sun on December 12th, at Terminal 6 of the Port of Portland. The ILWU had honored our community picket line, and we had successfully shut down the Port of Portland. I was speaking groggily with a retiree from the Teamsters’ Union; I can’t remember his name for certain but I think it was BIll. We were discussing the current state of the Occupy Wall Street movement. We were both extremely excited that it had turned toward labor solidarity as part of the struggle for social and economic justice.

If you're like many college students you probably work while in school (or would like to work). If you are working the job probably pays minimum wage or close to minimum wage. If this is the case then the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI) has good news for you: on January 1, 2012 you're getting a raise! So get ready: Oregon's minimum wage is going up 3.77% to a new level of $8.80 an hour.

Bullying In The Name of God

The issue of bullying has been a rather hot-button topic for parents, generally getting broad support in the community for government and school action to prevent the abominable practice. Well, good news! It appears that finally Michigan has passed a landmark law that will ban bullying in schools. Children and their parents everywhere rejoiced as rationality and reason prevailed once again.
